I have always been a Sports buff since i was a kid. I follow most sports Cricket , Soccer(EPL & Spanish la liga regularly), Football(American), Tennis, Table Tennis, NBA, NHL, NASCAR, F1....you name it. But, i must say that there is no sport like Football(American) in terms of excitement, planning, strategy, physical strength and conditioning, co-ordination, etc. That is why football is THE #1 sport in US, even though there are only 16 regular season games plus a maximum of 4 playoff games in a season. Football is America's timepass on Sundays from Sept to Jan. Teams needs to do so much of preparation and strategy for them to be able to play a game every week (60 minutes playing time).
For someone who happens to watch football on TV without knowing the rules of the game, the action wouldn't make any sense at all. They will see players in a pile very often and wonder what the hell they are trying to do. New York Giants won Super Bowl 42 last weekend and as a hardcore New York Giants fan since i started watching football in 2004, i thought it is perhaps a good time to point to a few links to help novices understand "Basics of American football".
